06 Jun Instagram Updates IGTV to Landscape Capabilities.

We finally got news of IGTV accepting videos in landscape mode. It’s a tool that we love and this update is a cherry on top of an already terrific digital marketing avenue. However, this wasn’t a development that was planned in the launch of IGTV. The co-founder Kevin Systrom was excited to launch a platform that only allowed vertical full-screen. He thought it was the way of the future. However, in the words of Dale Carnegie “Personally, I am very fond of strawberries and cream, but I have found that for some strange reason, fish prefer worms. ” In other words, just because he preferred something doesn’t mean that it would go over well with society at large. Finally, after a year of trying to convince the general public that this ‘way of the future’ was bigger and better than our ‘old’ ways of viewing videos on our streaming devices.

What does this mean for us?

We no longer are confined to one mode. Also, no matter how we prefer our screens turned, we have the maximum visibility of content possible instead of having to view tiny videos due to format restrictions. Also, content creators get to express themselves however they want. If one mode fits their style more than another, they are no longer confined.

How do I upload a horizontal video that I shot vertically?

It requires a small learning curve but it’s worth it! Video is predicted to make up, up to 78% of all consumed content on the internet by 2021. It’s worth mastering now so by the time it’s too big to ignore, we’re in step with if not ahead of the social media game.

First, you’re going to need video editing software – nothing too extreme or fancy, just enough to check the dimensions of the format of the video. Some good options include Final Cut Pro, Filmora, or iMovie- there are also many options that exist in the app store.

Once the app is launched and a new project has been created, the aspect ratio is to be changed to 1920×1080. There will be black bars present on the top and bottom and, unfortunately, there’s nothing that can currently be done about that.

Taking ‘imperfections’ to your advantage.

Instead of viewing these bars as a disadvantage, you can put your logo or text into them, making a marketing opportunity happen.

Regardless of aspect ratio, what can I do with IGTV that I can’t with stories?

One of the biggest advantages is the length of the videos that can be posted. Where stories allow you to post up to 15 seconds at a time, IGTV allows videos to be anywhere from 15 seconds to 1 hour long which opens up a window of opportunity for different kinds of video content including:

  1. Interviews
  2. Longer product demos
  3. Launching mini-series of different videos
  4. Webinars

Instagram is a marketing giant and a landmine of opportunities. We encourage you to get creative and try tools that you think will work as well as learning as much as you can about this powerful platform.
